The Philippines World Bike Projects explained by Karl Hughes

What started as a bike project to help 2 riders turned into something bigger. There were many leftover parts from the intial project, so Ordep from the Phil thought up the master plan of holding online flatland battles. The winners to receive all the leftover prizes as well as improve their skills by battling each other in online videos, and keep the scene pumped.

Realizing both the need for quality parts and the effort they were putting in, I spread the word and got alot of parts donated or sold cheap, as a bonus to the prize package. Since the start (July 2009) approximately 10 frames have been shipped over and hundreds of parts, all much needed. Only seeing pics of befores and afters can explain.

Many riders progressed alot and the scene has been growing steadily with the projects being very motivational.

The thank you list. Too many to remember, but I really want to thank Shane Badman and Ross Lavender for both personal contributions, as well as contiued support from Newcircle. Thanks to Clint Millar from Colony BMX, Pat from Flatlandfuel, Marcel Tremblay from the USA, Calvin Tan from Singapore, Gonz and team at Flipbykes, Ordep from Phil, Sean Brousard from Texas, USA, Jazzman from USA, Alex (Flem) from France, Sakis Doumis from Greece, Mike Brandt from Perth, Mik Dwyer, Grant Cruise and Kit McKenna from Melbourne, Ben McGuinness and Andrew Lightbody from Sydney, all whom donated parts or sold at very low prices made this project possible. Most of these parts ended up in the Phil. (a few parts ended up in South America and Vietnam for projects there.) The project has been going since July 2009, so I’m sorry if I forgot names. Thank you to all who supported, put time in and helped in many ways.

Cheers.

Karl Hughes

Day 1 in Vietnam – by The Ben Moran

Day 1: Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City
dve at the airport (tan son nhat) aboot 8:45am on the 8th of September flying via Singapore. I step out of the airport and it is hot like this lemon and lime drink that I currently drinking thanks to Jen. So there I am sitting there outside the airport waiting for that gangster Paul Lincoln Chamberlain, who arrives aboot 15mins later with bike bag in hand and that trademark humour of his.

We put our xe dap (bikes) together for the ride into the city. Everybody is staring at us and our little xe dap. We make the perilous journey into HCMC. The traffic is crazy! We arrive at our hotel in District 1 then we go for a ride. Meeting up with Ga con trai – Tanh Ga – Chicken Boy. We also meet up with the other riders, graff artists, skaters and tattoo artists in Cong von hoa park. Xe dap parts are given out and put on xe dap. Also Freestyle now stickers. Thanks to Shaun Jarvis for parts and stickers!!!

Flatland riding starts at 3:30pm over the road from Notre Dame Cathedral. The riders here are straight out gangsters ripping the ground to pieces. The session ends at 10pm. From there we head to a bar but I don’t make it – Well I do – but my xe dap doesn’t. . Sau (6) spokes out of the front wheel ripped out of the rim cracking it. Peg into wheel accident. Leaving no chance of using the rim again. So we make it to the bar for a chat and drink then head back to the hotel for a good nights sleep.

Thai Binh (peace).

The Philippines online battle interviews – part 1

Karl Hughes has been support the Filipino scene for a while now in a bunch of different ways. It was about time he felt that some recognition needed to go the way of the group of dedicated riders in the scene so here is the first interview of several to get to know the riders involved a little more…

Name, age and location:
Stephen “Ginman” Sonido
23 years old
Davao City, Philippines

Has your riding improved since the beginning of the philipine projects?
Yes, now i am able to push my limits with my bike and not worry that it might break during my prax sessions…

Has the online battles helped you, your riding, your scene?
Yes, it motivates me a lot to learn new links in such a short time..

Has the online battles changed flatland in your country?
Yes, i think it exposed the different riding styles throughout the country and made us even more motivated to learn those styles and integrate it to our own style..

What has been the reaction from outside assistance, from colony, newcircle, flatlandfuel, and many fellow riders?
I am very thankful specially to Karl Hughes for heading the bike projects, to the companies and people who contributed, and the locals who helped coordinate and distribute the parts here in the Philippines. Without Your help i would never ever have this kind of bike and would have never experienced flatland riding in its fullest.

Any words you’d like to add?
It is a blessing to receive such parts from good persons who doesn’t even know us. It is a miracle to be chosen, of all the others, as one of the recipients of the bike project. Let us not make their efforts go unnoticed. Lets put them parts to good flatland use, remain humble, and also be a blessing to others who are in need.

Matty Wootton – back from Europe!

Well my travel time has come to an end and am now chilling back in Tassie, pretty dam keen to start riding again after taking up eating HEAPS of food for two months!, one of the best things about travelling especially in Italy is the food, boy do they know how to cook.
So I think the easiest way to write about what went on is to point out some highlights so here is a few memories I can think of at the moment while we were in Europe and North Africa.

-Did a bit of city hopping (Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Rome)
-Caught up with the OG boys in Hungary and witnessed their crazy level of riding.
-Caught a seedy overnight train to Croatia!
-Island hopped around the Croatian Coast, hired a boat and drank a slab of beer on it with some friends we had met along the way
-Rented a car and drove up through Bosnia before catching a ferry to Italy
-Got engaged to my girlfriend Brogan (fiancee) in Venice
-Jumped into the Nile in Egypt
-Rode Donkeys in Egypt
-Found out how grumpy Muslims get during ‘Ramadan’ in Egypt! (so would I if I couldnt eat or drink anything all day)
-Did a hot air balloon ride in Luxor (amazing)
-Had an even seedier overnight train In Egypt!
-Ate pasta dish after pasta dish
-Caught up with some family in Milan and did the Cinque Terra walk, and got absolutely drenched from a storm.

All in all had a dam fun time even the bad moments you have when you travel turn in to good memories so Im ready to book another plane ticket now just not sure where yet.

Ciao
